USDA Certified Bio-based Product refers to a product that has undergone testing and verification by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to determine its bio-based content. Bio-based products are derived from renewable biological resources such as plants, animals, and forestry materials.

The USDA Bio Preferred Program aims to promote the use and development of bio-based products as alternatives to conventional petroleum-based products. The program provides a voluntary labeling initiative that allows manufacturers to showcase their products’ bio-based content and differentiate them in the marketplace.


To obtain USDA certification, a product must meet specific criteria regarding the percentage of bio-based content it contains. The certification process involves testing conducted by independent laboratories to determine the product’s bio-based content. If a product meets the required threshold, it can display the USDA Certified Bio-based Product label, which indicates the percentage of bio-based content present.
The USDA certification helps consumers make informed choices about the products they purchase by providing transparency and supporting sustainable agricultural practices. It also encourages the development of the bio-based industry, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and promotes environmental sustainability.

OK biobased certified products are those that have undergone testing and verification by TÜV Austria, a leading certification body, to determine their bio-based content based on the European standard EN 16785-1:2015. The certification provides information about the percentage of renewable carbon present in the product or material.

Bio-based products are derived from renewable biological resources such as plants, animals, algae, and other organic materials. The OK biobased certification program evaluates the bio-based content of a product and assigns a certification level based on the percentage of renewable carbon it contains.

The certification levels for OK biobased certified products include:

  1. OK biobased 1-star: Products with a bio-based content between 20% and 40%.
  2. OK biobased 2-stars: Products with a bio-based content between 40% and 60%.
  3. OK biobased 3-stars: Products with a bio-based content between 60% and 80%..
  4. OK biobased 4-stars: Products with a bio-based content higher than 80%.

The OK biobased certification label allows manufacturers to demonstrate the bio-based content of their products, enhancing transparency and credibility. It also promotes sustainable sourcing and production practices, supports the bioeconomy, and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.


It’s important to note that the OK biobased certificate focuses on the bio-based content of a product and does not necessarily address other aspects such as environmental impact or sustainability beyond the use of renewable resources.
